Aussie Surf Life Saving Titles
Last weekend I went to the Australian Surf Life Saving Titles, because my girlfriend was competing, and surprisingly I won a gold medal in the 2km beach run.
I had decided before Christmas that I would go with Jaimie over to Perth to compete, so I had rejoined Freshwater Surf Club and did my required patrols. It had been about 5 years since I was a member of the surf club, triathlons taking the priority, and I was looking forward to competing in all the surf swim and team events again.
Since I last competed at an Aussie SLS Titles a new event, the 2km beach run, had been introduced a few years ago. I was taking it seriously, wanting to win, and even did a couple of short beach running training sessions, but I had no idea what my competition would be like. In the end, my fitness was good, my running was good, and I took the lead at 500m and extended my lead to the finish.
The swims were a different story. I was good, but the others were better, and the short sprints were something very different to what I’m used to. But as most of those athletes now take a break from training, I’m writing my training program for the next 13 weeks building up to Quelle Challenge Roth.
Jaimie rowed well with her crew and made the fourth round. And now the surf season is over, her natural ability and love of running and swimming will be her new main athletic pursuit (as well as some netball). And she keeps telling me she needs to get a bike and learn how to ride! So there will be another triathlete in our house very soon
